The guitar tuition program has been running for over ten years at Hurlstone. Over that time there have been over many participants, learning in groups or privately. Senior students can also receive assistance for their HSC music studies and performances.
Our priority is to make learning easy for all students so they can develop the skills and knowledge needed to become awesome guitarists. Our main curriculum, The Ultimate Guitar Method, is designed to start at the most basic level possible and teach students music they know and enjoy, by artists like Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Hillsong, AC/DC, Ed Sheeran and Shawn Mendes.
Many Hurlstone students stay in tuition all the way through their high school career.
There are five key areas to guitar playing, called The Five Fundamental Techniques. These are Chords, Picking, Aural, Reading and Songs. These techniques are what make up our own curriculum, The Ultimate Guitar Method.
It’s quite common for guitarists to only learn one aspect: Songs. But our goal is for all students to progress evenly by learning all of these aspects. Students in The Ultimate Guitar Method are only able to pass grades when they complete all required areas.

Aspects commonly help students with; Changing chords, bar chords, scales, picking, solos, theory, improvising, arpeggios, sweeping, songwriting, alternate picking, tapping, legato, sight reading, percussive techniques and most importantly – learning songs.

We commonly help students with; Open chords, bar chords, HSC Music, scales, sight reading, music theory, solos, picking, fingerpicking, improvising, AMEB Exams, Trinity Exams and much more.
We keep several spare guitars of all shapes and sizes for students to use. In fact, we recommend trying out your first lesson before buying a guitar, so we can help you get the size and kind. It’s also important to try and get a guitar with low action – this is how high the strings sit off the fretboard.
